How to Personalize a Horse Halter

Horse halters come in all shapes and sizes, and it’s something of a spectacle to see in a farm store. But they can be expensive.

So when I came across this purple nylon halter for $5, I knew that I had to snag this deal.

But I also wanted to make it extra special. So today, I will show you how to personalize a horse halter.

Materials:

The first thing you need to do is get a halter. For this craft, you’ll need:

  • A nylon halter (horse size, or another size if you have a horse in real life)
  • Strong, heavy duty beads (I used wooden beads I bought at Joann Fabrics
  • Tapestry needle
  • Embroidery thread (Same color as halter)
  • Scissors

STEP ONE: Thread the needle.

Thanks to the large eye, you shouldn’t need a needle threader.

STEP TWO: Sew in anchor.

Taking the selected strap of halter (I chose the side cheek pieces), thread your needle under the weaving in the halter until you come about halfway. This will be your anchor for beading.

STEP THREE: String your beads.

You can arrange them in a pattern, or string them randomly. I’m choosing to do a symmetrical pattern. I recommend laying out your beads beforehand, so you know exactly how they will go.

STEP FOUR: Sew in beads

Measure how far your beads reach across the strap, and mark where they end. In that spot, thread your needle into the middle and pull through the weaving. Making sure the string is tight (hold strap sideways to check), make a knot on either end. Cut strings.

And then you’re done! You have a personalized halter!

If you want, you can also embroider designs onto your halter. Here I used green embroidery thread to add a cross.

I hope you enjoyed this article. Now you have a special halter for that special someday horse. Don’t be afraid to get creative and use whatever you want to decorate your halter. I’ve seen people use fabric paint, leather decals, and tons of other things. So use whatever you think will look best.
