Equinoxians:
Snowfire
There was a prophecy written long ago that two fillies, the Filly of Blood and the Filly of Snow, would come to Equinox to pave the way for the King’s return and play a major role in the Final Battle.
Snowfire is the filly of Snow. Born pure white with dark eyes, Prairie Tribe fiercely protects her and it seems she is constantly smothered with the expectation of what she is destined for. Her mother, Sunrise, died shortly after her birth and her father, Chance, is very protective of her. But all Snowfire really wants is to blend in.
Likes: Playing with her friends, training with Mapleberry.
Dislikes: Being reminded of her future, her sire’s over protectiveness, being picked on by her foster sister Dawnwillow.
Cascade
Captured by Shakirans moons ago, Cascade used to be Cascadesky before she lost her wings. Now a Grounded pegasus, Cascade is a natural leader and acts as a stand-in lead mare for the Grounded warriors during battles. As Snowfire’s aunt, she always tries to be there for Snowfire as a strong female figure, especially since she promised Sunrise at her death that she would look out for her. A daughter of the chief stallion and lead mare, Cascade shows great promise as a future permanent leader, despite her disability.
Likes: Talking with Snowfire, spending time with her mate, Thunder, encouraging her brother.
Dislikes: Being discriminated for her lack of wings, violence, Shakirans.
Thunder
One of the twin sons of the chiefs of Ocean Tribe, Thunder moved to Prairie Tribe to be with his mate, Cascade. Also Grounded from the Shakirans, Thunder is more like an older brother than an uncle to Snowfire, constantly making jokes. An able fighter, he acts as head of the Grounded commanders in battles. Although a little shorter than some of the Prairie Tribe steeds, Thunder has a big heart and likes being helpful.
Likes: Playing games with yearlings, spending time with family, eating kelp.
Dislikes: Tight spots, the ocean, Shakirans, bullying.
Sparktail
One of Snowfire’s closest friends, Sparktail always tries to be there for Snowfire. The chestnut colt is prideful, but bold, and as hotheaded as his fire-colored feathers. The son of a commander who’d died in battle, Sparktail dreams of being a successful warrior, protecting his Tribe and home.
Likes: Standing up for Snowfire, mock battles, hoof races.
Dislikes: Losing a race or a fight, standing still, letting Snowfire get hurt.
Windlily
A cremello with feathers colored like the sunset, Windlily is as close as a sister to Snowfire. Quiet, sensitive, and shy, Windlily is deeply empathetic and hates seeing any creature get hurt. She often tells stories to foals and wants to be a Healer’s apprentice. Her family is very close to her heart, especially her young niece Silent, a mute filly.
Likes: Gathering herbs for Mapleberry, telling stories, playing chase.
Dislikes: Fighting, thunderstorms, loud noises.
Sunrise
Sunrise essentially gave up her life for her daughter’s when she insisted to Mapleberry that Snowfire be saved. She only lived for a few minutes after Snowfire’s birth, and made sure that she had a good family before she passed away quietly with her head on Snowfire’s back. Snowfire doesn’t remember her very well, but always wonders what could have been.
Likes: Her mate Chance, her filly, being there for her family.
Dislikes: Shakirans, overzealous stallions, tight spaces.
Chance
Grieved by the loss of his mate, Chance actually ran away and abandoned Snowfire for a short time before he finally returned, a much wiser and stronger stallion. He’s now fiercely protective of his daughter and doesn’t want her to get hurt. He may be the only pegasus in Prairie Tribe who doesn’t want her to fulfill her destiny, just because of the danger it involves.
Likes: His family, talking with his father, taking action.
Dislikes: Patience, remembering the past.
Rowansun
As Snowfire’s grandsire and the chief stallion of Prairie Tribe, Rowansun is a wise and strong leader. He and his son, Chance, had a very strained relationship after the death of his first mate Emberpine, but have since mended their bond. His daughters Cascade and Dovespring are very close to him, even with Cascade’s shameful disability. He loves his grandfilly dearly and always tries to keep an eye on her.
Likes: Peace, protecting his herd, safety.
Dislikes: War, petty arguments with no cause, injuries that render him unable to help.
Mapleberry
A former Shakira mare from the Surface Order, Mapleberry was rescued from an abandoned battlefield by a stallion who would later become her mate. Despite hating her new home at first, Mapleberry soon settled in and was trained as a Healer by a blind mare named Morningbird. She now hopes that her former herd will one day learn about the King and repent. She’s a devoted follower of the King and is as close as a mother to Snowfire.
Likes: Studying prophecy, learning about new medicinal plants, helping others.
Dislikes: Watching a charge die, lukewarm followers of the King, haters of Shakirans.
Dawnwillow
Snowfire’s foster sister, Dawnwillow was born with one wing smaller than the other; an immense disappointment to her successful parents who took pride in their first colt, Oakheart, an incredible warrior. Despite the support of her older brother, Dawnwillow is still constantly ridiculed for her smaller wing and in return bullies and beats the other yearlings. Her foster sister is her favorite target, since Snowfire is the “chosen filly”.
Likes: Getting revenge, proving herself, being right
Dislikes: Her smaller wing, being babied, hearing rumors about herself.
Horses
Ruby
Ruby hates being ignored, but as one filly in the sea of many foals in Storm’s herd, it’s hard not to get overlooked. She often pulls elaborate pranks with her friend Breezy to gain attention. Her older brother Shade tries to keep her out of trouble, but that’s nearly impossible for a filly with a rebellious spirit and an insatiable sense of curiosity.
Likes: Exploring, getting noticed, pulling pranks.
Dislikes: Being overlooked, being scolded, getting caught.
Shade
The quiet older brother of Ruby, Shade is probably the most patient with his younger sister, always trying to answer her hundreds of questions. He was with Kestrel when they first came to Storm’s herd, but never answered Ruby’s questions about what life was like for them before they came.
Likes: Trying to be there for his sister, playing tag, winning hoof races
Dislikes: Seeing his little sister get in trouble or his mom sad, fear, Darkwind.
Storm
The dappled gray leader of Shakirana’s land horse herd isn’t all as he seems. Beneath the charm and loyalty there is something far darker and more dangerous than anyone can imagine.
Likes: Being loved, being in control, protecting the herd and being the hero.
Dislikes: Mutiny, suspicious muttering about him, Shakirans, Equinoxians.
Kestrel
Kestrel tries her best to be there for her son and daughter, but a heavy darkness weighs on her that neither colt or filly can figure out. One of Storm’s favorite mares, she talks often with him, but doesn’t seem to trust him like the others do.
Likes: Being there for her foals, peace, safety
Dislikes: Betrayal, danger, talking about the past or the future.
Shakirans
Lightflame
The silver daughter of Fireheart and Darkwind, Lightflame is the pride and joy of the leaders of the Surface order. Born alongside a twin sister, Hollystar, with malformed wings, Darkwind and Fireheart press Lightflame to be better, faster, stronger, and more clever than anyone else in the herd. Despite all the attention she gets, Lightflame carries the weight of her parent’s wants for her.
Likes: Playing, flying high above the clouds, making her parents proud.
Dislikes: Lies, pressure to be something she’s not, and being forced to train instead of play.
Darkwind
Darkwind knows the secret to order is complete and total control. So that’s how he rules the Surface Order of Shakirans. He schemes of one day being a high commander in the Elite Order; however, since he is a hybrid of Shakiran and Equinoxian, the likeliness of that happening is slim.
Likes: Order, control, executions.
Dislikes: Rebels, backtalk, disorder.
Fireheart
The cruel queen of the Surface Order, Fireheart was once a high-ranking warrior in the Dark Order. An unfortunate occurrence with her twin brother led to her demotion to Surface Order, so she fought her way to the top of the ranks with a little help of magic. Fireheart kills first and asks questions later. Her bloodthirsty manners have given her the nickname of “the Blood Queen”. What happened to the former queen, no one knows. Some suspect that Fireheart’s magic had a large part of it.
Likes: Torturing unfortunate souls, teaching her daughters, using force to control the herd.
Dislikes: Equines getting in the way of her conquest for power, spells that counteract her own, being questioned, the Names of the King.
Because I couldn’t find many pegasus pictures, some of the photos are regular horses. I will try to post pegasus pictures when I can!
I liked seeing the pictures of the pegasi and horses I just read about in Broken Wings. What an excellent story. It hooked me. And to answer your original question…. Hmmm … I think my fave character is Sunrise, and I’m very sorry she died. But the pure white filly foal was a nice twist. Clearly, Broken Wings is a prequel to your actual novels. Keep up the good work. You are a gifted writer. Sometimes it was hard to remember these were horses because you made their personalities come to life
Wow… thank you! That means so much to me!
Just curious… would you say there was anything I could improve on? Not looking for tiny details, but any big flaws in my prose or plot…
I haven’t seen that before, so I don’t know. I’ll have to watch it again.
How will your subscribers be able to access this book once it is done?
What do you mean?
Once The Call Of The King is finished how will your subscribers be able to read the book? Or will we have to download it like Broken Wings.
Neither. This is a project I am hoping to pitch to a literary agent someday. I might do a beta call.
Wow! Nice pictures! It’s really cool being fully able to imaging what the characters are doing and what is going on in your stories!
