Two Donkeys and a White Horse: An Epic Poem For Christmas

two brown donkeys

Treading slowly along the road

That quiet midnight clear

The donkey didn’t say a word

Didn’t even flick an ear

She had a job to do tonight

As she did every night before

But the donkey’s wisdom and insight

Said tonight would be something more

Hours later in a stall

Munching quietly

Among the animals, a baby’s squall

And she knew who it would be

Fast forward thirty-some years

That donkey is old and gray

Telling stories to her grand-colt

Whispering tales about that day

Now the creatures know the words and whispers

Of the Creator, Lord over them for years

And these two donkeys were no different.

And they knew that the colt’s time was near

Sure enough, one spring day

Two men came into town

They took the donkey’s grandcolt away

Saying “the Lord has need of him now.”

The old donkey watched as her daughter’s son

Carried quite proudly the Chosen One

That little baby, born all those years ago

Was the Son of Man the world needed so.

And when the colt’s duties were done

He came back home to the old donkey’s side

And both of them were quite solemn

Knowing the coming darkness and change of the tide

But unlike the humans, weeping and crying

Those wise little donkeys knew why he was dying

And they waited and waited as three days passed

Knowing that their Lord hadn’t breathed his last.

And lo and behold on that glorious morn

When He rose again, the donkeys made up a storm

Of braying and bucking and yells of good cheer

Till their poor owner wondered if their head was twisted weird.

And many years after that glorious day

When those two noble donkeys passed on to Heaven’s gates

They were put in the stable with a steed of pure white

Waiting for his rider to come like a thief in the night.

Now those two donkeys patiently wait

While serving the One they carried in those days

And the stallion is waiting his turn

For when the Lion of Judah is set to return.
